When one speaks of cardiology, one immediately thinks of the heart. After all, every thing that is associated with the heart or the study of it is called cardiology. Cardiology although, in its literal sense, means the study of the heart, is also a branch of medicine which is concerned with disorders pertaining to the heart as well as blood vessels and is normally divided into the fields of coronary artery disease, congenital heart defects, valvular heart disease, electrophysiology and heart failure. Cardiologists, as the physicians who are involved in this profession are called, are not to be confused with cardiac surgeons who perform surgery on the heart and blood vessels. Our heart is undoubtedly one of the most important organs of our body and basically functions as a pump to keep us alive by circulating blood throughout the blood vessels of our body. Needless, to say, without this organ, we may very well have not survived. And in case of heart failure, life is indeed extinguished. Cardiologists work to keep this particular system of the heart secure and healthy to ensure longevity and work through hospitals and clinics, where they assess patients and treat them. Conditions that are normally brought to them include pulmonary embolism, arrhythmia, hypertension, congenital heart disease, and vascular disease, they not only provide emergency assistance to people suffering from heart attacks, but are also involved in heart surgery and cardiac transplants. Some of the duties and tasks that are associated with this profession include: * To assess patients and plan their treatment. * To read as well as complete medical records. * To treat patients in emergency situations. * To consult and coordinate with other doctors and health professionals. * To advise patients on the merits of a healthy lifestyle as well as correct cardio-care. * Usage of equipment and technology such as tomography machines and magnetic resonance imaging to accurately diagnose diseases and prescribe treatments accordingly. * To inform patients with regard to medicines to be used and their possible side effects. As it is, the job of a cardiologist is of great importance, the opportunities for them are on the upswing with new innovations in medical procedures and technologies, which has also opened up several new vistas of specialization for them such as interventional cardiology that uses intervening methods such as laser, catheterization, balloon angioplasty, etc. In electrophysiology, the primary focus is on the electrical functioning of the heart, whereas nuclear cardiology focuses on using technology to diagnose and treat problems with pumping functions, coronary arteries, and damages to the heart from injury or disease. Echocardiography is also used where echocardiograms and other technologies are integrated. Therefore, job opportunities for Cardiologists are many with a variety of fields and institutions such as companies, research labs, governmental concerns, or even teaching jobs can be possible in careers other than obviously the hospitals and the clinics. |
