Emergency Physician Jobs

A physician's job is an important one, especially as he/she looks after and treats patients who suffer from a variety of ailments, and generally take care of the basic health and well being of all people.

But for those times, when the patient in question requires immediate and special care to deal with a severe illness or disease- without which his or her life would be in jeopardy, the physician who is expected to treat the patient is also expected to be well-versed with emergency procedures. In other words an emergency physician is required in such cases.

An emergency physician usually works in the emergency department of clinics, hospitals to treat patients who are seriously ill, and are normally experts in advanced life support for cardiac patients, care for trauma as in situations of soft tissue damages and fractures and also managing other life-threatening conditions.

His key skills include the ability to take immediate decisions and taking action to prevent any chances of death or further disability, both in pre-hospital settings by instructing emergency medical technicians and also in the department of emergencies. There are several sub-specialties, in which an emergency physician may receive training and jobs.

Lets have a look at some of the training programs to secure emergency physician jobs:

Medical toxicology: This focuses on the management of patients, who are victims of either accidental or purposeful poisoning through toxins or drugs.

Pediatric emergency medicine: This requires specific qualifications to manage emergencies concerning infants and children.

Sports medicine: Requires to look into issues encountered by people, while engaged in any kind of sports or activities, such as injuries and its prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The role of the emergency physician differs from place to place, with emergency physicians in Europe often being dispatched as part of emergency medical services along with EMTs as well as paramedics, especially in cases of life threatening conditions for patients such as victims of heart attacks, resuscitations and serious accidents.

In the United States however, these emergency physicians are usually hospital-based, but may also work in air ambulances and mobile units for intensive care. Triage is usually performed by these physicians when a patient is brought into an emergency room, which is basically a system so that those patients who require treatment the most are looked after at first and medical resources are rationed accordingly, especially in the case of the injured outnumbering the resources available. Once the patient is admitted to the hospital, another physician, who's a specialist such as a cardiologist or neurologist, takes over as the emergency physician.

The training program for emergency medicine is usually of three years in duration, during which students are taught to recognize, diagnose, evaluate, care for and stabilize a variety of patients either adult or pediatric cases for very serious illness or injury. For specialization, additional training is necessary usually lasting for about 1-2 years. As with most fields for physicians, emergency physicians are also in great demand and studies show that emergency departments of most hospitals need to be equipped with more of them to function at their best. Salary of course, is not a problem and being particularly an emergency physician, helps in ensuring satisfactory earnings.
